Tragedy in Kherson: Russian Strike Hits Minibus, Leaving One Dead and Five Wounded

KHERSON, Ukraine — A regular morning commute turned into a scene of devastation in Kherson’s Korabelnyi district on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, after a Russian drone targeted a civilian passenger minibus. The precise strike killed a 72-year-old female passenger and left multiple others hospitalized with serious injuries.

The attack occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m. local time, a peak hour for residents traveling to work across the city.

According to Yaroslav Shanko, head of the Kherson City Military Administration, the fixed-route minibus was moving through a residential corridor of the Korabelnyi district when it was directly struck by a loitering munition. The impact shattered the vehicle's windows and tore open its fuselage, trapping terrified passengers inside amid smoke and shrapnel.

First responders rushed to the scene to pull victims from the wreckage. A 72-year-old local resident sustained severe fatal trauma and succumbed to her injuries before medical personnel could stabilize her.

"This is another deliberate act of terror against civilian infrastructure," Shanko said in a statement on Telegram, offering deep condolences to the victim's family. "The operator could clearly see this was a public transit vehicle filled with ordinary citizens."

Ambulances quickly transported the surviving victims to regional trauma centers, where local officials provided specific details on the five passengers heavily impacted by the blast. A 40-year-old woman and three men, aged 46, 55, and 57, all suffered severe blast injuries, concussions, and acute acoustic barotrauma caused by the powerful shockwave.

Additionally, a 47-year-old woman was hospitalized with an intensive concussion, closed head trauma, and multiple shrapnel lacerations. Meanwhile, the minibus driver sustained a severe concussion but heroically managed to help passengers exit the vehicle before collapsing.

One of the male victims remains in critical condition, with surgical teams fighting to save his life. The tragedy in Korabelnyi was part of a coordinated wave of drone operations targeting Kherson throughout Wednesday morning. Just an hour after the minibus attack, an FPV drone struck a civilian car in the city center, killing a 53-year-old driver. In a separate incident in the Dniprovskyi district, an explosive dropped into a private residential yard killed a 71-year-old man.

Because the front line runs directly along the Dnipro River, Kherson remains highly vulnerable to low-flying, precise drone strikes launched from Russian-controlled territory on the eastern bank. Local military administrations have renewed warnings for residents to minimize travel during morning hours and to seek shelter immediately upon hearing the distinctive buzz of approaching unmanned aerial vehicles.
