Tragedy in Chakwal: Young Australian Girl Shot Dead After Police Mistake Family for Robbers

CHAKWAL, PAKISTAN — A devastating case of mistaken identity has left a nine-year-old Australian girl dead and her family shattered after local police opened fire on their vehicle in Punjab province, mistaking them for fleeing robbers.

The victim, identified as Hania Ahmed, was visiting relatives in Chakwal—about 90 kilometers southeast of Islamabad—alongside her father Adeel Ahmed, her mother Dr. Sidra Khan, and her brother Aafan. The family, from the Perth suburb of Kewdale, Western Australia, had just completed a pilgrimage to Mecca before traveling to Pakistan to see loved ones.

The tragedy unfolded late Wednesday night, June 10, 2026 around 11:40 PM. The family had just arrived at the home of Dr. Khan’s uncle, Ali Ejaz, when they were mixed by two armed robbers on a motorcycle. The criminals held the family at gunpoint, demanding jewelry and eventually fleeing with roughly $7,500 worth of gold.

Unbeknownst to the family, an off-duty officer from Pakistan's Crime Control Department (CCD) witnessed the robbery. The officer rushed back to his nearby station to retrieve his firearm and alert backup.

As the police returned, gunfire was exchanged between the authorities and the fleeing motorcyclists. Desperate to protect his wife and children from the crossfire, Adeel Ahmed hit the gas, accelerating their white Toyota rental car to get them out of harm's way.

Tragically, the police mistook the family's sudden escape for the criminals fleeing the scene. "As the cops saw the vehicle being driven away immediately, they took it as belonging to the robbers and opened indiscriminate fire on the car," a senior local police official confirmed to media.

High-caliber bullets riddled the vehicle. Though Mr. Ahmed managed to drive a short distance to the safety of another relative's gate, he lost control of the bullet-shattered car and crashed.

Nine-year-old Hania was struck down in the volley of gunfire and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the District Headquarters Hospital. Her father, Adeel, and brother, Aafan, suffered severe gunshot wounds and were rushed to Benazir Bhutto Hospital in Rawalpindi for emergency surgery. Dr. Sidra Khan, a dentist in Perth, was physically uninjured but left severely traumatized.

Mr. Ahmed has since been discharged, while young Aafan remains in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

Images of the rental car peppered with bullet holes have sparked widespread anger both in Pakistan and within the tight-knit Pakistani diaspora in Western Australia. Community leaders have called out the severe tactical negligence of the responding officers.

Asim Chaudhry, the General Secretary of the Pakistani Association of Western Australia, expressed the profound shock felt by the Perth community: "This news is very shocking, especially the death of a nine-year-old. We are wholeheartedly with them. It makes you think how negligence and ignorance for a split second can cause such a massive loss."

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed it is providing active consular assistance to the family during this harrowing time.

Meanwhile, Pakistani authorities are facing mounting pressure to hold the officers accountable. Regional Police Officer Hassan Jehangir Watoo and District Police Officer Kashif Zulfiqar have visited the surviving family members, assuring them that a full investigation is underway and swift legal action will be taken against those found guilty of the fatal blunder.
