Tragedy at the Space Needle: 3 Dead, 4 Injured—Including Toddler—in Seattle Festival Shooting

SEATTLE — A community celebration turned into a scene of utter terror on Sunday evening, July 26, 2026 when gunfire erupted at a crowded food festival near Seattle’s iconic Space Needle, leaving three people dead and four others wounded. Among those injured is a 2-year-old boy.

The mass shooting took place at around 6:00 p.m. during the final hours of the annual Bite of Seattle food festival, which draws hundreds of thousands of attendees to the sprawling Seattle Center events campus. According to the Seattle Police Department, the violence stemmed from a dispute between two individuals who began shooting at each other amidst the dense crowd.

One suspect was quickly taken into custody by responding officers, while police continue an active search for a second shooter.

Witnesses described an immediate wave of panic as what first sounded like fireworks rapidly revealed itself to be an active shooting. A live stream from a festival food vendor captured the chilling moments the gunfire broke out, with voices shouting, "Shooting! Shooting! Get down, get down!" as thousands of festival-goers scrambled for cover.

"People were hiding, were pushing, people were falling on the ground, baby strollers were falling," said attendee Estan Wakonabo, who was waiting in a photo booth line when the chaos started. Others fled wildly into surrounding attractions, including the nearby Seattle Children's Museum and the main lobby of the Space Needle, to escape the crossfire. Vendors abandoned their stalls and equipment to join the rush toward the exits.

Emergency crews arrived to find a heavily congested scene. Two victims were pronounced dead on the pavement at Seattle Center after life-saving efforts failed. A third victim later succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital.

Four surviving victims were transported to Harborview Medical Center. Hospital and fire department officials confirmed that the injured include a 2-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man, and two adult women. The victims suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen, arms, and legs. While one female victim was listed in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery on Sunday night, authorities stated that all four surviving hospitalized victims are currently stable.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson issued a poignant statement late Sunday expressing the city's collective grief and outrage over the tragedy: "What happened at the Seattle Center today was an act of horrific violence," Mayor Wilson said. "An entire community is trying to understand how a gathering built around culture, connection, and joy ended in gunfire. No one should have to weigh the risk of being shot before attending an event, gathering with friends, or experiencing their city."

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson confirmed that State Patrol SWAT officers were deployed to assist local law enforcement in clearing the expansive complex and securing the perimeter.

Assistant Seattle Police Chief Tyrone Davis emphasized that investigators believe the two suspects were targeting one another, meaning there is no broader ongoing threat to the public. However, police do not yet have a verified physical description of the second suspect who fled the scene.

Homicide detectives are urging anyone with video footage or information regarding the altercation to contact the Seattle Police Department immediately as they work to piece together the events leading up to the deadly exchange.
