Tragedy at Holy Site: Massive Landslide at Ethiopian Monastery Leaves 14 Dead

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA — A devastating landslide triggered by heavy rainfall struck a historic monastery in Ethiopia, claiming the lives of at least 14 people and leaving several others missing. Emergency response teams, regional authorities, and local volunteers have mobilized at the sacred site to clear tons of mud and debris in a desperate search for survivors.

The landslide occurred during the early Tuesday morning hours, August 4, 2026 sending a torrent of mud, boulders, and uprooted trees cascading down the hillside directly onto the monastery complex and adjacent living quarters. The sudden collapse trapped pilgrims, monks, and nearby residents who were gathered at the holy site.

Local residents rushed to the scene alongside first responders as soon as the earth gave way. Search-and-rescue teams have recovered 14 bodies from the rubble so far, while several injured survivors were pulled from the mud and rushed to nearby clinics for urgent medical treatment.

Meanwhile, rescue crews using heavy machinery alongside local volunteers digging by hand continue to sift through the dense mud, as a number of individuals remain unaccounted for. The structural damage across the monastery grounds is extensive, leaving several traditional dwellings and prayer halls buried or severely compromised by the landslide.

The disaster comes amid a period of intense seasonal rainfall across the region, which has saturated the soil and significantly heightened the risk of earth movements along steep, mountainous terrain. Environmental experts and local officials have warned that continued downpours pose an ongoing risk of secondary slope failures in the area.

"The community is in deep mourning after this unexpected tragedy at such a revered site," said a local administrator coordinating relief effort. "Our immediate focus is on aiding the injured, supporting grieving families, and locating anyone still trapped under the debris."

Government disaster relief agencies have begun delivering emergency supplies, including food, clean water, and temporary shelter kits, to assist those displaced by the disaster. Regional authorities have also advised residents and pilgrims in surrounding high-risk areas to evacuate to safer ground while safety assessments of the unstable terrain remain underway.
