A viral Facebook livestream in Tonga has triggered allegations that three young Tongan women were taken to China for marriage and may have been trapped in distressing conditions. The Chinese Embassy in Tonga said it is working with the Tonga embassy in China and that, based on information available so far, there is no evidence verifying human trafficking. The embassy described the matter as likely “transnational marriage disputes” and said Chinese police are assisting the women. Tonga Police have urged caution about unverified claims as investigations continue.
