Terror at the Resort: Two Tour Buses Collide and Overturn at Genting Highlands, Leaving At Least 7 Injured

GENTING HIGHLANDS, Malaysia — A terrifying chain-reaction collision shattered the afternoon weekend transit at Malaysia’s premier hilltop resort town on Saturday, May 30, 2026, when a reckless tour bus sparked a three-vehicle pile-up that left a bus overturned and at least seven people injured.

The dramatic crash along the winding downhill stretch of the resort's main thoroughfare prompted an immediate emergency deployment and led to the arrest of a veteran commercial driver with a shocking history of traffic violations.

The incident unfolded at approximately 5:09 PM at KM16 of Jalan Genting Highlands-Genting Sempah. According to the Bentong district police, a tour bus carrying foreign holidaymakers was navigating a sharp bend on its descent from the highlands when the driver suddenly lost control of the heavy vehicle.

The runaway bus careened forward, violently striking the rear of a Perodua Aruz sports utility vehicle (SUV) before ramming hard into the back of a second tour bus traveling directly ahead of it.

The sheer force of the impact sent the second express bus skidding wildly into the left shoulder, where it flipped completely onto its side. Meanwhile, the initial offending bus veered across the tarmac, coming to a halt on the right side of the road and effectively blocking traffic lanes.

First responders from the Genting Highlands Fire and Rescue Station rushed to the scene following a flurry of urgent distress calls. Fortunately, panic was minimized as all passengers and drivers managed to extricate themselves from the battered vehicles before emergency crews arrived.

The overturned bus had been carrying 36 Nepali passengers. Rescue officials administered immediate first aid on the roadside before transporting the injured to Selayang Hospital and Kuala Lumpur Hospital for further treatment.

"A tour bus carrying 36 passengers, all of whom were Nepali nationals, overturned and sustained injuries," stated Pahang Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Director Mohd Salahuddin Isa.

While the second bus suffered the brunt of the physical destruction, passengers aboard the first bus—comprising Bangladeshi and Nepali nationals—miraculously emerged unscathed. Of the three occupants inside the struck SUV, one Malaysian national sustained injuries. Authorities confirmed that all injuries reported were minor.

Following preliminary field assessments, Bentong District Police Chief Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar confirmed that the 55-year-old driver of the first express bus was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving.

A routine database check exposed a glaring history of negligence, revealing that the driver currently holds 29 outstanding traffic summonses for various past offenses.

A routine urine screening conducted on the suspect immediately following the crash returned negative for illicit substances. The case is now being actively investigated by authorities under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The physical extraction of the overturned bus and debris caused minor traffic backlogs as holiday traffic slowed to a crawl during the cleanup operation.
