Shattered Shoreline: Santa, Ilocos Sur Coastal Road Collapses Under Batter of Raging Waves

SANTA, ILOCOS SUR, Philippines — A critical stretch of the coastal highway in Santa, Ilocos Sur, has been completely closed to traffic after relentless, pounding waves caused a significant portion of the asphalt to fracture and collapse into the sea.

The structural failure has cut off a vital transit route and sparked intense anxiety among coastal families who fear the encroaching ocean could soon reach their doorsteps.

The collapse occurred following days of intensifying sea swells and strong coastal currents. The continuous, heavy battering eroded the underlying soil and rock foundations supporting the roadway, creating a massive hollow beneath the pavement.

Without a stable base, a large section of the coastal road gave way, slumping directly into the crashing surf below and rendering the lane completely impassable.

Local police and municipal engineering teams rushed to the site to establish safety barriers and completely seal off the compromised zone from all motorists and pedestrians.

The dramatic collapse has sent a wave of concern through the nearby barangays situated along the immediate shoreline. For years, residents have watched the coastline gradually recede, but the sudden destruction of a reinforced roadway has underscored how aggressively the sea is advancing.

Many families living just meters away from the impact zone expressed fear that subsequent high tides and worsening weather conditions could compromise their homes next.

"We heard the grinding of the pavement when it went down," said one local resident. "If the waves can destroy a thick concrete road that easily, our houses don't stand a chance. We are terrified of what will happen during the next major storm."

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has been notified of the structural failure and is currently assessing the total extent of the damage. In the meantime, local authorities have issued an urgent travel advisory, redirecting all public and private vehicles to internal diversion roads.

While temporary barriers and warning signs are in place, municipal leaders are calling for immediate national intervention, emphasizing the need for an engineered seawall or reinforced boulder barriers to stabilize the shoreline before the sea claims more infrastructure.
