“El Mayo” Ismael Zambada Garcia was sentenced to life in prison in Brooklyn on drug trafficking charges described by prosecutors as evidence of decades of cartel leadership. Federal court heard that Zambada, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel with Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, oversaw trafficking of cocaine, fentanyl and other drugs into the United States while maintaining violence and corruption within the organization. Along with life imprisonment, he was ordered to forfeit $15 billion for profits linked to his role as principal leader.
