Mukdahan, Thailand—The morning air turned violent as a pickup truck plowed into a line of walking monks. The group was five kilometers into a scheduled pilgrimage when the vehicle veered off the road. Thirty-five monks and five lay followers were moving in single file along the shoulder.
The vehicle was operated by an 11-year-old boy. He had taken his parents’ truck without their knowledge or consent. Witnesses reported the truck swerving erratically before the impact occurred. There was no time for the group to react or find cover.
Five monks died instantly at the site of the collision. Emergency responders rushed three others to the provincial hospital, but they succumbed to their injuries hours later. Fourteen other individuals remain under medical care. Three of those survivors are in critical condition.
Phra Sompong, one of the monks who narrowly avoided the truck, described the chaotic scene. He heard the roar of an engine and felt the impact before he could finish a mantra. He and another companion managed to jump away just as the vehicle tore through their line.
Police took the boy into custody immediately following the crash. Child protection officers were dispatched to the scene to handle the boy’s interview. Officers seized the truck for a full forensic examination to confirm the mechanical state of the vehicle at the time of impact.
The Mukdahan provincial governor, Worayan Bunnarat, spoke to the press shortly after the incident. He described the event as a massive failure of road safety. He warned that the legal process regarding the child’s parents would begin once the initial investigation concluded.
Community members have since gathered at the site to offer prayers and leave offerings. The road remains blocked as investigators document the skid marks and debris. The local hospital has issued an urgent call for blood donations to support the remaining victims.
The atmosphere in Mukdahan is heavy with shock. Monks are highly respected figures in local society, and this procession was a well-known community event. There is no indication yet of when the road will be cleared for normal traffic.
