Morning Quake: Davao Elementary Students Evacuate After Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Hits Region

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Panic turned to swift execution on Tuesday morning, July 28, 2026 as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake jolted the Davao Region, prompting the immediate evacuation of students and teachers at San Roque Central Elementary School in Davao City.

The early morning tremor struck at approximately 7:06 a.m., just as the school day was getting underway. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake's epicenter was located 15 kilometers southeast of the coastal town of Baganga in Davao Oriental, at a depth of 28 kilometers. Initially reported as a magnitude 5.6 tremor, the state seismology bureau later downgraded the event to a magnitude 5.1.

At San Roque Central Elementary School, located in Barangay 20-B, Obrero, Davao City, the sudden shaking forced school authorities to instantly trigger their emergency disaster protocols.

Hundreds of learners were systematically ushered out of their classrooms and onto the school's open grounds and designated safe zones. Teachers and parents worked in tandem to calm distressed students, ensuring everyone practiced the "duck, cover, and hold" technique before making an orderly exit.

The precautionary evacuation extended beyond the campus. Tenants and shoppers at the nearby NCCC Victoria Plaza commercial center also spilled out into the streets and parking areas as a safeguard against structural damage and impending aftershocks.

Though centered off the coast of Baganga, the tectonic quake resonated widely across Mindanao. PHIVOLCS reported Intensity III shaking in Tarragona (Davao Oriental), Nabunturan (Davao de Oro), and the cities of Digos, Bislig, and Talacogon.

Meanwhile, weaker Instrumental Intensity I tremors were officially logged within Davao City itself, though the movement was pronounced enough to trigger immediate safety alerts across high-occupancy structures and local schools.

Local disaster risk reduction and management offices across the Davao Region immediately initiated rapid damage assessments of public infrastructure, bridges, and school buildings. While PHIVOLCS has noted that no major structural damage is anticipated from a tremor of this scale, residents have been warned to remain alert as aftershocks are expected to continue throughout the day.
