DAMASCUS, Syria — A powerful car bomb explosion ripped through eastern Damascus on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 killing at least one Syrian soldier and wounding several others. The blast, which echoed across multiple districts of the Syrian capital, detonated near a Defense Ministry building and a former military headquarters.

The attack marks a sudden and violent breach of security in a heavily fortified area of the capital. The incident unfolded in the Bab Sharqi area, near the entrance of the military’s Armament Administration headquarters and the al-Dweilaa neighborhood. According to a statement issued by the Syrian authorities' Media and Communication Administration, an army unit had initially discovered a separate explosive device planted near one of its facilities.

As military engineers and ordnance disposal teams were actively working to dismantle the first device, a booby-trapped vehicle positioned nearby was detonated.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the blast resulted in the "martyrdom" of one soldier, while as many as 12 others sustained varying degrees of injury.

Eyewitnesses reported that the shockwave from the explosion shook buildings across several surrounding neighborhoods. Immediately following the detonation, intense gunfire erupted in the area as security forces moved in to cordon off the perimeter and establish a safety zone.

State television and local reporters at the scene captured footage of a car engulfed in flames near the entrance gates of the ministry building, with thick black smoke billowing into the Damascus sky.

"It was a massive blast that rattled windows several blocks away," a local resident in the al-Dweilaa district noted. "The gunfire right after the explosion created total panic as people tried to flee the streets."

Emergency medical vehicles rushed to the scene to transport the wounded soldiers and civilians to nearby military and public hospitals.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the targeted bombing. Syrian security forces have launched a full-scale forensic investigation at the site of the wreckage and have significantly tightened checkpoints across the capital.

The attack serves as a stark reminder of the volatile security landscape in Damascus, where booby-trapped vehicles and planted explosive devices continue to pose a threat to both military infrastructure and civilian populated areas.
