Midnight Blaze: Firefighters Battle Massive Recycling Center Fire as 500 Tonnes of Waste Ignites in Corby

CORBY, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE — Emergency crews worked tirelessly overnight to contain a massive industrial blaze after an estimated 500 tonnes of mixed recycling waste caught fire at a commercial facility in Corby.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service deployed 10 fire engines and two specialized aerial appliances to the site on Gretton Brook Road, situated within the Earlstrees Industrial Estate, after receiving urgent calls shortly before 2:00 PM on Monday, August 10, 2026.

The blaze generated a towering column of thick black smoke that could be seen from miles away across neighboring counties, including Leicestershire, Rutland, and Peterborough. Local eyewitnesses described the visual impact as staggering, with some reporting an initial explosion followed by smaller pops as flames consumed packed materials.

Northamptonshire Police assisted on scene by cordoning off Gretton Brook Road and managing crowd control as firefighters worked to build defensive perimeters around adjacent industrial buildings.

Emergency management officials advised nearby residents and businesses to take strict precautions as heavy, toxic smoke drifted across residential zones. People in the vicinity were urged to keep all windows and doors closed, while drivers and pedestrians were asked to avoid the area to ensure clear access for emergency vehicles along key connecting routes. Additionally, indoor protocols were activated, leading local nurseries and schools to keep children safely inside while air quality levels were continuously monitored.

Industrial fires involving tightly packed recycled materials are notoriously difficult to extinguish. Compacted piles of plastic, paper, and wood allow intense heat to burrow deep beneath the surface, creating persistent deep-seated hotspots.

"Fires involving large quantities of compacted waste can prove particularly difficult to extinguish because flames penetrate deep into piles of material, creating hotspots that may continue burning for extended periods."— Fire Service Operations Note

Fire crews remain on site dampening down hotspots and pulling apart the smoldering debris to prevent re-ignition. Official investigations into the precise cause of the initial fire will commence once the site is declared safe.
