Officials reported three dangerous incidents at Helsinki’s Hietaniemi beach on Tuesday as crowds arrived for one of the warmest days of the year so far.
In two separate cases, children went missing from their parents or guardians. In both situations, adult beachgoers formed human chains to help search for the children. Team leader Jukka Lundgren from the City of Helsinki’s sports services said one child was in the water and the other was found on the beach. Both girls, around age 10, were ultimately found unharmed.
Later the same day, officials said an adult who did not know how to swim got into trouble after going too deep due to a sudden drop-off on the seabed. Bystanders helped, and the person swallowed some water, but no ambulance was needed; their condition was monitored.
Lundgren emphasized that parents and guardians must keep track of children at all times near the water, especially children who can’t swim. He also credited lifeguards for managing the situations calmly and said announcements were made asking everyone to get out of the water before swimmers assisted with the search.
