Lagos Tragedy: 9 Dead, 27 Rescued After Multi-Story Building Collapses

LAGOS, Nigeria — Emergency frontline teams have officially concluded a grueling overnight search and rescue operation at the site of a collapsed multi-story commercial complex in Lagos State. The final toll stands at nine individuals dead and 27 survivors miraculously pulled alive from the mountain of twisted debris.

The catastrophic structural failure occurred around midday Thursday, June 25, 2026 at the bustling Alakija Bus Stop along Old Ojo Road, located in the Satellite Town area of Amuwo-Odofin. The multi-story building housed numerous active retail hubs, including a cybercafé, local Point-of-Sale (POS) outlets, and generator dealerships.

According to terrified eyewitnesses, the structural collapse occurred with zero warning. Passersby reported hearing a deafening structural tear before the complex imploded, sending massive plumes of concrete dust into the air and trapping scores of shoppers and workers beneath heavy slabs.

Local residents later revealed that the complex had exhibited visible structural flaws for several years, noting that some business owners had previously relocated out of fear. Outraged community members claimed the building had been flagged for evacuation by regional safety board’s long before Thursday’s collapse.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) immediately activated its rapid response protocols, deploying specialized tactical squads to the disaster zone within 40 minutes.

Rescuers utilized heavy-duty excavators to systematically break down concrete barriers and safely access air pockets where victims were trapped. The operation continued uninterrupted through the night, officially hitting "ground zero" at approximately 4:00 a.m. Friday.

LASEMA's Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Afolabi Olawale, detailed the grim casualty breakdown in a statement issued Friday morning: "Twenty-seven persons were rescued alive and received immediate pre-hospital care from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being transferred to nearby healthcare facilities. Sadly, nine fatalities were recorded. This includes four adults who died before responders arrived and five additional victims, including a two-year-old baby girl, recovered during the extrication process."

The tragedy has reignited intense public furor across Nigeria regarding rampant regulatory failures, corners cut by contractors, and the utilization of substandard construction materials in commercial hubs.

In immediate response to the incident, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu extended his condolences to the victims' families and directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to take immediate steps. Inspection teams have been ordered to conduct structural integrity assessments on all adjoining buildings in the Satellite Town area to enforce strict compliance and prevent further loss of life.
