Inferno at the Marina: 14 Injured as Raging Fire Sinks Boats in Marseille’s Iconic Old Port

MARSEILLE, FRANCE — A massive, violent fire erupted in Marseille's historic Vieux-Port (Old Port) on Sunday morning, July 5, 2026 sending plumes of thick black smoke into the sky, injuring 14 people, and completely sinking two large vessels.

The disaster unfolded at approximately 10:30 AM on the Quai du Port, right along the city hall (Hôtel de Ville) side of the marina. The popular tourist hub dissolved into panic as flames devoured a speedboat and leapt to an adjacent vessel.

Witnesses reported a sudden breakout of fire on a speedboat measuring approximately 10 to 12 meters in length. Fueled by marine materials, the flames swiftly intensified and spread to a second, larger 20-meter ship docked alongside it.

Videos shared to social media captured dramatic footage of thick smoke blanketing the waterfront as terrified civilians fled the immediate gangways. The heat and damage were so severe that despite the intensive efforts of first responders, both vessels burned down to the hulls and sank into the harbor after the flames were brought under control.

"Two boats caught fire and sank in Marseille's Vieux-Port on Sunday morning, closing part of the harbour waterfront and stopping maritime shuttles."— Benoît Payan, Mayor of Marseille The high-stakes fire triggered a massive emergency response from the Bataillon de marins-pompiers de Marseille—the elite French Navy unit responsible for the city's fire and rescue operations. A total of 150 firefighters were deployed to the quay, alongside 37 emergency vehicles and specialized fireboats to engage in the containment operation.

Emergency services treated a total of 14 individuals at the scene. Among those affected, six people suffering from minor burns were transported to local hospitals for urgent treatment. According to port authorities, the injured individuals included passengers who had been on the vessels when the fire broke out, two responding police officers, and a member of port security.

Marseille officials quickly placed the Quai du Port area under complete lockdown to ensure public safety and allow responders to secure the area. All municipal ferry services and maritime shuttles running through the harbor were temporarily suspended.

While the blaze was successfully brought under control within hours, the exact cause of the initial ignition remains unknown. Marine investigators have launched an inquiry to determine whether the fire stemmed from a mechanical failure, electrical malfunction, or fueling accident. The incident has also raised heightened safety concerns across the region, which has been grappling with elevated summer temperatures and an increased regional fire risk.
