MARACAIBO, Venezuela — A massive explosion and subsequent fire tore through a vital gas processing facility on Lake Maracaibo in western Venezuela, leaving at least six plant operators severely injured and forcing an emergency evacuation of the surrounding installation.

The incident marks another blow to the nation's fragile energy infrastructure, which has been plagued by operational strain and frequent safety incidents over the last decade.

According to state energy officials and local civil defense teams, the blast occurred late in the evening at the complex, which sits directly on the shores of Lake Maracaibo—a historically critical hub for Venezuela's oil and natural gas sector.

Witnesses from nearby lakeside communities reported hearing a deafening roar, followed by a brilliant flash that illuminated the night sky for miles. Within minutes, a massive wall of fire engulfed one of the high-pressure processing units. Thick columns of black smoke, fueled by burning hydrocarbons, could be seen billowing into the atmosphere.

Highly specialized fire crews belonging to the state-run energy company, Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), rushed to the scene alongside municipal emergency units. It took first responders several hours of intense effort to isolate the feeding pipelines, depressurize the system, and successfully contain the raging inferno.

At least six plant workers sustained varying degrees of burns and smoke inhalation during the initial blast and subsequent scramble to contain the leak. Emergency medical teams stabilized the victims at the scene before transferring them to specialized medical facilities in Maracaibo for intensive care.

"Our primary focus remains on the health and recovery of our injured personnel," a regional civil defense coordinator stated. "The prompt response of the facility's internal emergency teams prevented what could have easily spiraled into a much larger loss of life."

PDVSA has launched a technical committee to investigate the root cause of the disaster. Preliminary indicators suggest a potential mechanical failure or sudden drop in pressure within a gas compression line, which may have led to a catastrophic leak and subsequent ignition.

While authorities emphasize that the situation has been fully stabilized, the temporary shutdown of the processing plant is expected to disrupt regional gas distribution networks. The incident has once again drawn sharp scrutiny toward industrial safety standards, maintenance budgets, and the overall resilience of the country's energy infrastructure.
