LLEIDA, SPAIN — A major emergency operation is underway in western Catalonia after a passenger coach slammed into the facade of a provincial government building on Wednesday morning, June 29, 2026 leaving 46 people injured—four of whom are currently fighting for their lives.
The horror crash occurred at approximately 7:15 AM on Rambla Ferran, directly outside the Lleida Provincial Council building. The interurban bus, which was carrying 55 passengers on a route from Lleida to La Granja d'Escarp, had just departed from a nearby station when it veered sharply off course.
Dramatic footage and images from the scene show a catastrophic impact zone. The front section of the coach was completely crushed and torn apart upon hitting a structural pillar of the building. Debris, metal fragments, and shattered glass were left strewn across the roadway as a massive contingent of emergency workers rushed to rescue trapped commuters.
The Medical Emergency System (SEM) and local fire services deployed a massive response, including 12 ambulances, 11 fire engines, a medicalized helicopter, and a team of crisis psychologists.
According to emergency medical officials, the crash resulted in 46 injuries: four passengers remain in critical condition with life-threatening wounds, nine sustained severe trauma including fractures and limb amputations, and 33 suffered minor injuries and contusions.
The majority of those injured were taken immediately to the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital for emergency surgeries and intensive care. Many of the passengers were seasonal agricultural workers heading to the Baix Segre region for the local fruit harvest.
One of the passengers on board recalled the terrifying moments before the impact, stating that the bus made a sudden, unexpected right turn before crashing directly into the building's facade.
Local authorities revealed that the driver behind the wheel had only recently been hired by the transport company and was being accompanied by an experienced secondary driver, who is reportedly among those seriously injured. The primary driver tested negative for alcohol. While a definitive cause has not yet been established, regional fire officials indicated that a sudden loss of vehicle control is the leading hypothesis.
The Mayor of Lleida, Fèlix Larrosa, described the crash as "the most serious" accident within the city's recent history, though he expressed relief that no fatalities have been recorded so far. Catalan political leaders, including President Salvador Illa, have expressed their deep solidarity with the victims and their families as the investigation into the crash continues.
