Horror in Kollam: 3 Children Crushed to Death After Soil-Laden Tipper Overturns at Bus Stop

KOLLAM, INDIA — A horrific morning commute transformed into an unimaginably grim scene on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, when an out-of-control, soil-laden tipper lorry mowed down a bus shelter before completely overturning in the Nileshwaram area of Kottarakkara. The violent crash claimed three lives and left multiple others injured, shocking the local community.

The disaster unfolded at approximately 7:15 AM, a peak transit hour when the roadside waiting area was crowded with students and professionals preparing for their daily commutes.

According to the local police and eyewitness accounts, the heavy commercial vehicle was traveling at an excessive speed when the driver abruptly lost control. The speeding tipper veered sharply off the roadway, pulverized a nearby wall, and ploughed directly into the crowded bus shelter.

The force of the impact caused the massive lorry to flip completely upside down. In a cruel twist, its heavy cargo—a massive payload of soil and sand—was violently dumped directly onto the commuters seeking shelter beneath the structure.

"It happened so fast; the people waiting near the wall had absolutely no time to escape," an eyewitness recounted. "The lorry just plowed through, flipped, and instantly buried everyone under a massive pile of earth".

At least ten people were at the bus stop during the impact, including several children. Multiple victims were completely submerged under the thick mound of heavy soil, desperately cutting off their oxygen supply.

Terrified local residents and shopkeepers immediately rushed to the crash site to claw through the soil and debris before being joined by emergency personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services. Using heavy machinery, shovels, and their bare hands, teams spent grueling hours digging through the heap of earth to locate trapped survivors.

Tragically, three individuals could not be saved. The deceased have been identified as 15-year-old local Class X student Parthip, who was waiting for his morning school bus; Ajayakumar, 50, an employee of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC); and Harilal, 54, a resident of Nileshwaram.

Five other victims sustained injuries ranging from minor lacerations to critical trauma. The injured survivors—including young students identified as Rishab (15), Kaushik (15), Navaneeth Krishnan (13), and Jibimol (15)—were pulled from the debris and rushed to nearby hospitals, including Medicity Hospital in Kollam and the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital.

The tragedy has sparked immediate public outrage across Kollam regarding lax oversight within the commercial trucking sector. Preliminary investigations by law enforcement revealed a flagrant violation of public safety: the driver of the tipper lorry, who also sustained injuries and remains hospitalized, did not possess a valid heavy vehicle license.

In a swift punitive response, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) immediately canceled the vehicle's fitness certificate. Local ministers, including PC Vishnunath and Bindu Krishna, visited the hospitalized survivors to assure grieving families that a comprehensive criminal probe has been launched to hold both the driver and the vehicle owners strictly accountable.
