Horror in Algeria: At Least 27 Dead After Bus Plunges Into Deep Ravine

BOUMERDES, Algeria — A horrific traffic disaster on Friday, July 31, 2026 left a trail of immense grief in northern Algeria after a passenger bus veered off a dangerous stretch of road and plummeted into a deep ravine, killing at least 27 people and injuring dozens more.

The catastrophic crash, which officials are calling one of the deadliest road accidents the country has seen in recent years, occurred near the coastal town of Boumerdes, roughly 50 to 55 kilometers east of the capital, Algiers.

The bus was en route from the eastern province of Sétif toward Algiers when tragedy struck at approximately 9:41 a.m. local time. As the vehicle traveled along National Road No. 24 near the village of El Karma, it lost control, veered wildly off the asphalt, overturned, and plunged down a steep cliffside.

Algeria’s Civil Protection agency stated that the vehicle left the roadway for reasons that remain unknown. However, the aftermath painted a scene of absolute horror. Rescue teams and ambulances rushed to the rugged site, working frantically to pull survivors from the mangled wreckage and transport the wounded to nearby hospitals, including the University Hospital of Boumerdes.

Health Minister Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene reported that between 39 and 42 people suffered injuries, with several in critical condition. The minister warned that given the severity of the trauma, the death toll could still rise.

Following the disaster, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed profound sorrow and declared three days of national mourning. In a sharp public statement published by his office, the President took aim at the broader crisis of reckless driving, describing those responsible for catastrophic road accidents as "road criminals and terrorists". He vowed that the justice system would enforce strict punishments once the official investigation concludes.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited wounded passengers at the hospital to assess the emergency response firsthand.

Witnesses and local residents have pointed to the treacherous nature of the route where the crash took place. The winding coastal road is notorious for sharp turns and steep drops.

"It’s a very dangerous bend in the road," noted Ryad Ferkioui, a witness who arrived shortly after the crash. "We desperately need authorities to install proper safety barriers along this entire route to prevent cars and buses from going over the edge."

Traffic accidents remain a significant crisis in Algeria. While investigators are still looking into whether mechanical failure, human error, or road conditions caused this specific crash, road safety authorities emphasize that human factors—particularly speeding—remain the leading cause of highway fatalities nationwide.
