Highland Inferno: Massive Fire Response Mobilized at Fearn Airfield in Easter Ross

EASTER ROSS, Scotland — A large-scale emergency operation is currently underway in the Highlands after a major fire broke out near a historic airfield. Over half a dozen emergency crews and specialized resources are on the scene battling a fierce blaze that has completely engulfed a large agricultural structure.

Emergency services were scrambled to Fearn Airfield Road, located near the former naval airbase in Easter Ross, at approximately 9:20 AM on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 following reports of a rapid fire outbreak.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) immediately dispatched six fire appliances alongside additional specialized units to contain the escalating incident. Images and videos shared on social media by local residents show massive plumes of thick black smoke rising into the Highland sky as intense orange flames tear through the large farm building.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have deployed high-pressure hose reels to tackle the core of the inferno. Due to the size of the structure and the potential presence of agricultural machinery or combustible materials inside, crews are focusing heavily on defensive containment to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby airfield infrastructure or adjacent lands.

"We currently have six appliances and specialist resources at the scene near Fearn Airfield," an SFRS spokesperson confirmed. "Crews are working tirelessly under challenging conditions to bring the structural fire under control."

The massive smoke column drifting across the Ross-shire countryside has prompted local authorities to issue an urgent safety warning for surrounding communities. Residents living in the immediate vicinity of Fearn Airfield and downwind of the plume are strongly urged to keep all windows and doors closed to avoid breathing in toxic particles.

Additionally, motorists traveling on local routes near Tain and Balintore are advised to exercise extreme caution, reduce their speeds, and turn on headlights, as drifting smoke patches have severely compromised road visibility.

Fearn Airfield, a site steeped in history as the former WWII naval airbase HMS Owl, sits adjacent to the active, privately owned Easter Airfield. At this stage, it remains unclear if the fire has caused any direct disruption to local general aviation operations or nearby private hangars.

No casualties or injuries have been reported by emergency services so far. The firefighting operation is expected to last for several hours as teams work to douse deep-seated hotspots within the collapsed framework of the building. A full investigation into the exact cause of the outbreak will be launched by the SFRS once the site is fully cooled and safe to examine.
