GISBORNE, New Zealand — An ordinary Friday evening took a terrifying turn in the Gisborne region today when a vehicle veered off a rural road, triggering a massive emergency response and leaving 11 people hospitalized.
Emergency teams rushed to the scene after a major "traffic-related incident" occurred on Wharekopae Road in Pātūtahi around 5:15 PM on Friday, June 19, 2026.
The scale of the crash required a swift and heavy response from Hato Hone St John, which dispatched a total of 13 vehicles to the rural location. The rescue fleet included five ambulances, two rapid response units, two operations managers, and a major incident support team.
Due to the remote area and the severity of the crash, three rescue helicopters were also sent to the scene to airlift the most critical victims directly to medical care.
First responders faced a chaotic scene as they worked to stabilize and pull multiple patients from the wreckage.
Medical personnel confirmed that a total of 11 people sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to Gisborne Hospital.
According to St John, the victims' conditions vary significantly, with five patients currently in serious condition, three in moderate condition, and three having suffered minor injuries.
New Zealand Police quickly closed Wharekopae Road to allow emergency crews to safely clear the debris and investigate the crash site. Authorities have advised motorists to completely avoid the area and expect extensive delays as the Serious Crash Unit begins its inquiry into what caused the vehicle to veer off the roadway.
