MALAYBALAY CITY, BUKIDNON: Relentless downpours triggered by the southwest monsoon (habagat), significantly enhanced by Super Typhoon Inday, and unleashed catastrophic flash floods across several low-lying areas in Malaybalay City on Wednesday afternoon, July 8, 2026. The sudden deluge inundated agricultural lands, overflowed vital spillways, and forced hundreds of local residents to rapidly abandon their homes for emergency shelters.
Local authorities have confirmed one fatality resulting from the severe weather conditions, while extensive relief operations are underway to support the displaced population.
The torrential rains intensified rapidly at around 3:00 p.m. local time, quickly overwhelming localized drainage and river systems. According to data verified by Aria Cagaanan, the operations and warning officer of the Malaybalay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), the sudden flash floods heavily impacted five key barangays: Managok, Miglamin, Linabo, Violeta, and Simaya.
In Barangay Managok, sweeping floodwaters completely submerged vast tracts of local rice fields and caused a main spillway to overflow, cutting off standard transit routes. Simultaneously, a rain-induced landslide temporarily blocked a critical road section in Barangay Miglamin, though emergency clearing crews successfully restored access later that evening.
As water levels rose dangerously inside the residential sectors, emergency responders systematically deployed to transport affected citizens to safety. Official CDRRMO logs show that over 200 families were displaced by the flash floods and are currently housed across designated municipal evacuation hubs, including the Violeta Evacuation Center.
Despite the rapid deployment of rescue teams, authorities tragically reported one casualty. A 50-year-old male resident from Barangay Managok drowned after being caught and swept away by an aggressive current while attempting to cross an overflowing waterway.
Following the aftermath of the storm, the Department of Education (DepEd) Malaybalay City Division ordered the suspension of in-person classes for Thursday, July 9, across several heavily affected campus locations, including Sawaga Elementary School.
In the flooded zones of Barangay Linabo and surrounding communities, local students and stranded residents had to be assisted across submerged streets using specialized guide ropes rigged by emergency volunteers. CDRRMO personnel and barangay officials remain stationed on the ground to monitor fluctuating river levels, conduct rapid damage and needs validation, and ensure the continuous distribution of food packs and welfare assistance to the evacuees.
