Flash Flood Disaster: At Least 20 Dead After Sudden Deluge Hits Northeast Afghanistan

KABUL — Heavy torrential rains triggered a series of catastrophic flash floods across northeastern Afghanistan on Monday, July 20, 2026 killing at least 20 people and leaving more than 100 others missing. The sudden, violent deluge has caused massive infrastructure destruction in an already isolated and rugged region.

Local authorities and aid representatives described apocalyptic scenes in Parun, where a raging torrent completely destroyed core infrastructure, including the town's municipality building, local hotels, a central market, and dozens of riverside shops. The disaster has resulted in massive casualties, with 20 confirmed fatalities, over 80 people treated for severe injuries, and an additional 105 individuals—including the mayor of Parun—still missing after being swept away by the fast-moving waters. As the initial deluge receded, it left behind massive boulders and thick layers of silt that have blocked streets and effectively buried parts of the town under heavy debris.

Disaster management officials announced that emergency response teams were deployed to the border province, but the rescue operation faces steep hurdles. Due to the isolation of the area and the destruction of local roads, distraught residents have been forced to dig through mud and piles of rocks with their bare hands in a desperate bid to locate missing family members.

The national disaster agency released a statement acknowledging "severe financial and human losses" and expressed deep fears that the true scale of the catastrophe will expand as communication is restored with surrounding cut-off villages. Chief government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid also took to social media to verify the widespread destruction and offer condolences to the affected families.

Environmental experts point out that Afghanistan remains uniquely vulnerable to the accelerating impacts of global climate change. Earlier this month, Matiul Haq Khalis, head of the country's environmental protection agency, warned that intensifying flood cycles have pushed Afghanistan deeper into an unmanageable humanitarian crisis. With basic public resources stretched to their limits, local emergency crews are facing an uphill battle to provide immediate shelter, clean water, and medical aid to the thousands of residents displaced by Monday's disaster.
