Firestorm in Quiapo: Heavy Blaze Engulfs Commercial Building at Iconic Raon Intersection

MANILA, Philippines — A fast-moving second-alarm fire broke out at a commercial building at the bustling corner of Rizal Avenue and Gonzalo Puyat (Raon) Street in Sta. Cruz, Manila, on Tuesday afternoon, July 28, 2026. The emergency sent thick columns of dark smoke billowing over the city's premier electronics and hardware trading district.

The blaze reportedly originated on the upper floors of the building; with emergency responders receiving the initial call at approximately 12:31 p.m. Embers and heavy smoke were seen escaping from the windows as the fire quickly gained traction. Due to the rapid spread of the flames and the structure’s location in a high-density area, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) upgraded the emergency to a second alarm within minutes, calling in multiple regional fire units.

The building houses several commercial shops specializing in electrical equipment, sound systems, machinery, and automotive components. The concentrated presence of highly combustible materials inside the electronic supply stores fueled the intensity of the blaze, making early suppression efforts difficult.

Dozens of fire trucks from both the BFP and local volunteer brigades rushed to the scene. Responding personnel faced significant challenges navigating the area due to Sta. Cruz's notoriously narrow streets, overhead power lines, and dense midday foot traffic.

Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) personnel and local police cordoned off the intersection to keep onlookers at a safe distance and allow firefighting teams clear access to the structure's perimeter. The closure caused major gridlock along the Rizal Avenue and Quiapo corridor, prompting traffic authorities to reroute public utility vehicles and advise motorists to bypass the Raon area entirely.

Firefighters deployed aerial ladders to combat the blaze from above and prevent the fire from leaping to adjacent commercial buildings and heritage structures lined up along the historic avenue.

No casualties or major injuries have been reported, as building occupants and employees managed to evacuate the premises immediately upon detecting the smoke. Arson investigators are currently conducting a comprehensive review to determine the exact cause of the fire, with initial assessments focusing on potential electrical failure. Officials are also evaluating the structural integrity of the affected property and estimating the total cost of damage to the merchandise and retail units.
