Firestorm in Garki Area III: Petrol Tanker Blast at AYM Shafa Station Spreads to Surrounding Buildings

ABUJA, NIGERIA — A quiet Thursday night erupted into panic in the heart of Nigeria’s capital when a petrol-laden tanker exploded during fuel discharge, sparking a massive blaze that quickly engulfed the AYM Shafa filling station in Garki Area III and spread to neighboring structures.

The explosion occurred around late on Thursday evening, August 6, 2026 as the tanker was offloading highly flammable Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) into the station’s underground storage tanks. Witnesses reported hearing a deafening roar followed immediately by a towering column of fire that illuminated the night sky across the federal capital.

The sudden blast unleashed a wave of intense heat and raging flames, which rapidly spread beyond the station's perimeter. Burning fuel spilled onto the adjacent roadway and swept into surrounding commercial buildings and parked vehicles before workers or bystanders could react.

"We just heard a loud boom, and within seconds, the whole station was covered in flames," said an eyewitness who was at a nearby shop. "People were running in every direction, screaming for help as the fire started catching nearby shops."
