HONG KONG — A tragic high-rise fire in a residential unit on Friday morning, left one woman dead and three other residents hospitalized. The incident, which triggered a localized explosion, sent thick plumes of toxic smoke billowing through the building, forcing mass evacuations.
The blaze broke out at approximately 10:04 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2026 inside a flat at Valiant Court, located in the Ho Man Tin residential area.
According to initial emergency reports, the fire erupted suddenly inside the high-rise residential unit. Shocked onlookers captured video footage circulating online showing intense flames completely engulfing the flat.
The situation rapidly deteriorated when a window-mounted air-conditioning unit caught fire and violently exploded. The blast breached the exterior envelope of the flat, allowing venting flames to lick up the side of the building and compromise the upper floors.
The Fire Services Department responded with a heavy deployment of resources. Firefighters operating on the scene utilized a main hose line alongside a dedicated breathing apparatus team to aggressively combat the interior blaze and search for trapped occupants.
Amid the thick smoke logging the upper residential corridors, search and rescue squads managed to pull four residents—three women and one man—directly from the burning unit. Outside the building, approximately 30 residents successfully self-evacuated to ground level as safety alarms echoed through the complex.
Paramedics treated the four extricated victims at the scene before rushing them via ambulance to Kwong Wah Hospital for urgent medical care.
Among the victims, a woman in her 50s was discovered inside the flat unconscious by rescue teams. Despite aggressive emergency resuscitation efforts by medical staff, she was later certified dead at the hospital. The remaining three residents continue to receive treatment for smoke inhalation and fire-related injuries.
The Hong Kong Police Force, in conjunction with fire investigators, have cordoned off the affected unit. A formal investigation has been launched to pinpoint the exact technical cause behind the initial ignition and subsequent air conditioner failure.
