Explosion and Flames: Drone Attack Targets Major Petrochemical Hub in Tobolsk, Siberia

TOBOLSK, Russia — A deep-strike drone attack targeted Russia’s largest petrochemical complex in the Tyumen region on Monday, August 10, 2026, triggering a fire at a vital gas processing facility located over 2,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

The strike hit the Central Gas Fractionation Unit (CGFU) at the ZapSibNeftekhim plant in Tobolsk, a flagship facility operated by Russian petrochemical giant SIBUR. The targeted Central Gas Fractionation Unit (CGFU) plays a critical role in these operations by converting liquid gas mixtures into essential feedstock’s for polyethylene and polypropylene production—polymers widely utilized across domestic manufacturing, including automotive components, piping, packaging, and military supply chains.

Following the attack, regional emergency services deployed fire brigades to contain the resulting blaze, and while preliminary reports indicate no immediate casualties, technical teams are currently assessing structural damage to the unit to determine any potential disruptions to plant output.

The strike on Tobolsk highlights the expanding geographic reach of long-range drone operations targeting key energy and industrial nodes deep within Russian territory. Located approximately 2,200 kilometers from Ukraine, the Tobolsk complex represents one of the most distant industrial hubs hit to date.
