MOSCOW, Russia — A wave of coordinated Ukrainian drone attacks struck multiple regions inside Russian territory overnight, leaving at least four people dead and causing significant damage to local infrastructure.

The deadly incursions mark a major escalation in cross-border aerial warfare, demonstrating Kiev's expanding capability to launch deep-tier strikes well beyond the frontline.

According to statements from Russian regional governors and local emergency services, the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeted residential areas and industrial facilities across several border districts. Air defense systems were activated in multiple sectors, but several drones managed to bypass the perimeter or drop payloads before being intercepted.

The casualties were reported across two separate border regions.

In the Belgorod region, a drone strike directly impacted a residential home, resulting in three civilian fatalities. Meanwhile, a separate drone strike in the Kursk region claimed the life of a fourth civilian after shrapnel struck a vehicle near a security checkpoint.

Emergency medical teams treated several other individuals on-site for shrapnel wounds and shock. Beyond the human toll, the drone wave aimed to disrupt logistics and local utility networks, causing the partial collapse of two residential buildings and shattering windows that forced families into temporary shelters. In the targeted zones, direct hits on local power substations triggered temporary blackouts for thousands of residents before engineering crews’ rerouted power. Additionally, a drone interception ignited a fire at a fuel depot, requiring specialized teams several hours to bring the blaze under control.

The Kremlin has fiercely condemned the strikes, labeling them as deliberate acts of terrorism targeting civilian populations. Russian defense officials stated that dozens of Ukrainian drones were successfully neutralized by electronic jamming and anti-aircraft batteries, preventing a much larger catastrophe.

Conversely, military analysts note that Ukraine’s intensified domestic drone production has allowed it to scale up these long-range operations. By bringing the reality of the conflict directly into Russian territory, Kiev aims to strain Moscow’s air defense resources and disrupt the logistical hubs that supply the frontline.

In the wake of the attacks, local authorities have elevated security alerts across all western Russian provinces, advising citizens to avoid open areas and strictly adhere to air-raid warnings.
