ADELAIDE — A chaotic and terrifying scene unfolded in Adelaide’s northern suburbs on Wednesday morning, July 29, 2026 after a knife-wielding man stabbed a police officer in the neck before being shot by police on a major roadway.
Emergency services rushed to Main North Road in Elizabeth East just after 11:00 AM following multiple panicked reports from the public detailing a man armed with a knife running directly out into oncoming traffic.
Northern District police arrived on the scene within minutes, confronting the suspect near Fairfield Road in an immediate effort to protect public safety. The encounter escalated rapidly into violence. During the struggle, a female police officer was stabbed in the neck. In response to the life-threatening attack, the 27-year-old suspect was shot in the leg by police.
The injured officer was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Officials have since confirmed that while her wounds are severe, they are thankfully non-life-threatening. The suspect, a man from Woodville Gardens, was also transported to the hospital under police guard. His gunshot wound is likewise considered non-life-threatening.
South Australia Police (SAPOL) Acting Assistant Commissioner David O'Donovan praised the rapid intervention and bravery of the responding units.
"The response by police today was swift and to what was clearly an evolving and rapidly dangerous situation," O'Donovan said. "Their actions today were in response to an immediate threat posed by an armed individual, and I wish to acknowledge the courage and professionalism of the members today."
Authorities emphasized that the incident was isolated and that there is no ongoing risk to the wider public.
The southbound lanes of Main North Road have been completely closed to traffic as Major Crime Detectives, the Forensic Response Section, and the Internal Investigation Section process the complex scene.
The 27-year-old suspect remains in custody and is expected to face dynamic and "very serious charges" once he is medically cleared by hospital staff. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses dash cam footage from Main North Road around 11:00 AM to immediately contact Crime Stoppers.
