Ecological Disaster: 8-Hour Inferno Devastates Up to 35 Acres of Lal Sohanra National Park

BAHAWALPUR, PAKISTAN — A devastating wildfire has swept through the highly protected ecosystems of the Lal Sohanra National Park, consuming critical forest vegetation, trees, and wild shrubs spanning an estimated 30 to 35 acres.

The park, situated in the Punjab province and globally recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is one of Pakistan's largest protected nature reserves, serving as a sanctuary for highly endangered desert and forest wildlife.

According to emergency personnel from the Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122), the catastrophic blaze erupted just prior to Friday evening in a dense forest pocket located near the 36-RD marker within the park. Fueled by dry summer brush and high seasonal heat, the flames rapidly fractured into multiple locations across the rugged terrain.

The thick smoke plume and rapidly advancing fire wall quickly engulfed native trees and undergrowth. The severe layout of the terrain significantly hindered initial containment efforts, as the most aggressive pockets of fire were situated in dense zones that proved exceptionally difficult to access with heavy emergency vehicles.

Faced with an escalating ecological emergency, District Emergency Officer Baqir Hussain led a heavy mobilization of emergency units to the site. Rescue 1122 quickly established an active Incident Command Post (ICP) right at the forest edge, systematically carving up the burning zone into three operational sectors to establish strict containment boundaries.

Firefighters deployed six dedicated fire engines, a specialized disaster response vehicle, and an on-site ambulance team. Because navigating the rugged brush was highly challenging, rescue teams had to manually hook up water lines to local ponds, artificial water reservoirs, and specialized high-capacity water bowsers to continuously feed the fire hoses.

Following a grueling battle lasting between six and eight hours, the frontline response teams successfully managed to suppress the main intensity of the inferno, successfully preventing a wholesale breakout into neighboring wildlife enclosures.

While the core advancing fire line was successfully broken, emergency officer Riaz Ajmal noted that thick columns of smoke were still heavily billowing from the blackened husks of wild trees and smoldering embers late into Saturday morning. Specialized mop-up and cooling operations have continued on-site to guarantee that the embers scattered across the dry shrubs do not reignite under intense daytime heat.

"Rescue teams and fire vehicles remain stationed on-the-ground, continuously monitoring the operational grid to completely eliminate any remaining sub-surface thermal hazards," an official update confirmed.

The formal administration of the Lal Sohanra National Park has withheld any definitive statement regarding the precise genesis of the spark or a detailed breakdown of wildlife fatalities. However, local conservationists fear the swift destruction of up to 35 acres of rare, green irrigated plantations will heavily displace small mammals, bird species, and unique desert reptiles nesting in the dense undergrowth.
