HEATHCOTE, VIC — A quiet Tuesday evening shattered in central Victoria when a violent collision between a car and a heavy freight truck claimed the lives of two people in Heathcote.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the McIvor Highway at approximately 9:45 PM on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, following reports of a catastrophic crash.

First responders arrived quickly at the scene, near the junction of the Northern Highway, only to discover a scene of total devastation.

The force of the impact between the passenger vehicle and the freight truck left the car heavily mangled. Paramedics assessed the vehicle's occupants, but sadly, both individuals inside the car had suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. They have not yet been formally identified.

The male driver of the freight truck was physically uninjured in the collision. Shocked but cooperative, he stopped immediately and remained at the scene to assist emergency crews and police with their initial inquiries.

The collision prompted an immediate, large-scale emergency response, resulting in the closure of a critical regional transit artery. The intersection of the Northern Highway and McIvor Highway was entirely blocked off to allow major crash investigators to examine the scene. To manage the disruption, police established detours stretching back to Knowsley to divert heavy transport and local commuter traffic away from the active investigation site.

Consequently, local authorities advised motorists to avoid the area entirely on Wednesday morning as forensic investigators worked through the night to map the crash site and clear debris.

The exact cause of the crash remains under active investigation by the Victoria Police Major Collision Investigation Unit. Investigators are working to determine the events leading up to the fatal impact and are pleading with the public for assistance.

"We are appealing to anyone who may have been driving in the area just prior to the collision to check their dash cam footage," a Victoria Police spokesperson said in a statement. "Any piece of visual evidence, no matter how minor it seems, could be vital to understanding how this tragedy occurred."
