Disaster in Washington: 1 Dead, 9 Missing After Massive Chemical Tank Implosion

LONGVIEW, Washington — An industrial facility became a "mass casualty scene" on Tuesday morning, May 26, 2026 when a massive chemical storage tank imploded at a pulp and paper mill, leaving one person confirmed dead and nine workers missing. Authorities have expressed grave concern for those unaccounted for, stating there appears to be no hope for their rescue.

The disaster occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. facility, located along the Columbia River in Longview.

According to emergency responders, the catastrophic incident involved a tank holding approximately 900,000 gallons of "white liquor"—a highly corrosive alkaline solution consisting primarily of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide. The chemical mixture is used with high heat to break down wood chips into pulp during the paper-manufacturing process.

The sudden implosion ruptured the massive vat, causing the chemical brew to spill into a nearby drainage ditch. In addition to the fatalities and those missing, ten other people—nine plant employees and one responding firefighter—sustained injuries. Medical officials reported that victims suffered severe chemical burns and inhalation injuries, with several listed in critical condition. Four of the most severely injured workers were transferred to the Legacy Oregon Burn Center in Portland.

Around 40 firefighters and paramedics, alongside a regional hazardous materials team, rushed to the site to decontaminate victims and secure the area. However, the remaining structure continues to pose an extreme danger.

Cowlitz Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein explained that roughly 90,000 gallons of the corrosive liquid remain trapped inside the heavily damaged and unstable structure.

"We don't know until we know... how we can stabilize the tank," Chief Goldstein said. "Do we remove the product first? Do we stabilize the tank first or vice versa?"

Because the mangled tank risks further collapse or additional leaking, emergency personnel are restricted to working strictly during daylight hours to structurally reinforce the site before additional recovery operations can proceed.

The Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility employs roughly 1,000 people and has been central to the local economy for decades, manufacturing materials for cartons, cups, tissues, and paper plates. The sudden tragedy has deeply shaken the tight-knit community of Longview.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson visited the scene alongside federal lawmakers, offering condolences and deploying a team from the state’s Department of Ecology to evaluate the environmental impacts of the spill.

While authorities have assured the public that the chemical spill is contained and poses no immediate threat to the surrounding community, a thick blanket of grief hangs over the town as families gather at local union halls and vigils, holding out a painful wait for official answers. The exact cause of the tank’s implosion remains entirely unknown and is under active investigation.
