Eurostat data show renewables are increasingly dominating electricity consumption across the EU. In 2024, more than three-quarters of electricity consumed came from renewable sources in Austria (90.1%), Sweden (88.1%) and Denmark (79.7%).
The renewables share was also high in Portugal (65.8%) and several other EU countries, with many above 50%—including Spain (59.7%), Croatia (58.0%), Latvia (55.5%), Finland (54.3%), Germany (54.1%), Greece (51.2%) and the Netherlands (50.5%). At the low end, the share of electricity from renewables was below 25% in Malta (10.7%), Luxembourg (20.5%), and Slovakia (24.9%), among others.
Overall, the EU’s electricity generation increasingly relies on wind, hydro and solar, with renewables nearly reaching the 50% level in total
