China Adds Warheads as Nuclear Powers ‘Walk Away’ from Disarmament: SIPRI

According to the recently published SIPRI Yearbook 2026, China has added 20 nuclear warheads to its stockpile over the past year, reflecting ongoing modernization and expansion efforts within its nuclear capabilities. This marks a significant increase, bringing China's total to 620 warheads as of January 2026. SIPRI's report emphasizes that the trend among major nuclear powers signifies a troubling retreat from disarmament efforts that characterized previous decades.

The report outlines that while the majority of China's warheads are stored separately from launchers, there is evidence that some warheads may now be deployed on missiles during peacetime exercises. SIPRI estimates that approximately 34 warheads are currently in operational deployment, up from 24 the previous year.

China's nuclear forces have reportedly surpassed those of the U.S. and Russia in terms of land-based missile silos, with around 775 pathways identified for intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). This burgeoning arsenal suggests a significant shift in strategy as China potentially aims to match or exceed the capabilities of other nuclear-armed states.

SIPRI's Director, Karim Haggag, pointed out the alarming contradiction between the stated commitments to non-proliferation and the actual escalation in nuclear capabilities. With the New START treaty's expiration, there is concern that the absence of effective arms control agreements could lead to more aggressive posturing among nuclear powers, undermining global security.

The geopolitical implications of this nuclear buildup are far-reaching, casting doubt on the future of diplomatic efforts aimed at disarmament. As nations like China bolster their military capabilities, the global community remains on alert for potential escalation, particularly in regions where tensions are already high.

The growing stockpile reflects a broader trend where states appear to prioritize national power through nuclear deterrence, potentially igniting a renewed arms race that could destabilize international relations and exacerbate security dilemmas worldwide.
