BANGKOK, THAILAND — A busy street in Bangkok was transformed into a chaotic trail of twisted metal after a driver suffered an emotional breakdown behind the wheel, intentionally ramming his vehicle into eight other cars. The destructive rampage, fueled by a sudden relationship breakup, left two people injured and a crowded roadway in complete disbelief.
The incident unfolded on Sriwara Road in Bangkok's Wang Thonglang district during on Wednesday evening rush, July 1, 2026. Commuters watched in horror as a bronze-grey Mercedes-Benz, still bearing temporary red license plates, repeatedly plowed into traffic.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a rapid series of loud crashes as the luxury sedan accelerated down the road. According to a 36-year-old motorcycle delivery rider on the scene, the Mercedes showed no signs of slowing down, smashing directly into an SUV and continuing forward to strike multiple other commuter vehicles before finally coming to a halt.
The force of the multi-car pileup caused severe damage to the surrounding vehicles. Emergency services arrived quickly to treat the victims, confirming that two occupants of a rear-ended vehicle sustained minor injuries.
When traffic police and bystanders approached the heavily damaged Mercedes, they initially suspected the driver was heavily intoxicated due to the reckless nature of the collision. Instead, the driver—identified as a 42-year-old man—stepped out of the vehicle trembling and in tears.
The visibly distraught driver confessed to witnesses and responding officers that he had just received a phone call from his partner ending their relationship. Overwhelmed by anger and heartbreak, he completely lost emotional control.
"I tried to calm him down," the delivery rider later told reporters. "I reminded him that no matter how severe his personal problems were, he shouldn't let his frustration hurt innocent people."
The driver, deeply apologetic, reportedly agreed on the spot to compensate all the affected car owners for the extensive property damage.
The driver was taken into custody and escorted to the Wang Thonglang Police Station, while the crushed Mercedes and several damaged victim vehicles were impounded for investigation.
Initial breathalyzer and drug screenings came back completely negative, ruling out alcohol or illicit substances as factors in the crash. Preliminary background checks also revealed no history of psychiatric treatment.
Despite his willingness to pay for the damages, authorities have formally charged the driver with reckless driving causing injury and property damage. Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and gather video evidence from the scene as the legal case moves forward.
