OAMARU, NEW ZEALAND — A large, aggressive vegetation fire erupted at Waitaki Boys' High School on Tuesday morning, June 9, 2026, sending towering plumes of black smoke over the campus and triggering an emergency response from regional fire crews.

Emergency services were called to the historic North Otago School just before 9:00 a.m. as flames rapidly tore through a dense macrocarpa hedge line bordering the school grounds.

The fire broke out at the edge of the school’s Don Field, quickly engulfing an estimated 200-meter stretch of mature trees. Fueled by the dry macrocarpa timber, the blaze intensified rapidly, throwing flames high into the sky and blanketing the surrounding sports fields in heavy smoke.

As the fire advanced, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) spokesperson confirmed that at least one school structure was directly threatened by the heat and flying embers.

Witnesses also reported that the fire appeared to originate along the nearby railway tracks before jumping into the school's boundary trees, though an official origin point has yet to be finalized.

The proximity of the raging fire to school facilities forced quick defensive action. School officials acted immediately to evacuate some of the students from nearby classrooms to safer areas of the campus. Nearby, a local kindergarten was also forced to evacuate, with anxious parents rushing to place children into vehicles to move them away from the encroaching smoke and danger zone.

Emergency response teams quickly swarmed the area to establish a containment line, deploying eight total fire crews to suppress the fast-moving flames. The initial firefighters donned breathing apparatus to combat the dense, toxic smoke, while police and emergency personnel blocked several surrounding roads to clear the area and ensure water tenders had continuous access.

Thanks to the aggressive response from firefighters, the blaze was successfully contained before it could breach and destroy school buildings. Waitaki Boys' High School later posted a statement to social media expressing their profound gratitude to the emergency services for their rapid intervention.

While the immediate danger has passed, police are treating the incident with caution. Oamaru Sergeant Tony Woodbridge stated that the cause of the large fire is currently being classified as "unexplained".

Authorities and fire investigators remain on-site and are actively appealing to the public for assistance. Police are requesting that anyone with information, or anyone who captured footage of the fire during its earliest stages, contact them immediately to help piece together exactly how the blaze began.
