Between Rates and Markets: Indonesia Holds Its Interest Rate Steady as the Rupiah Faces Global Currents

Financial decisions rarely arrive with the noise of a crowded marketplace. They emerge instead from meeting rooms, data tables and the slow movement of numbers across screens. Yet a single percentage can eventually travel far beyond those rooms, reaching borrowers, businesses, investors and households across Indonesia.

Bank Indonesia kept its benchmark BI-Rate at 5.75 percent following its August 18–19 Board of Governors meeting. The central bank also maintained its Deposit Facility rate at 4.75 percent and its Lending Facility rate at 6.50 percent.

The decision came as the central bank continued to balance several objectives at once: maintaining rupiah stability, keeping inflation within its target range and supporting sustainable economic growth. Bank Indonesia said global volatility remained an important consideration in its policy decision.

At the same time, the domestic banking system has continued to show movement. Bank lending grew 13.58 percent year over year in July, accelerating from 12.67 percent in June. The figures suggest that credit activity has remained relatively strong even as policymakers continue watching the broader economic environment.

There is another kind of movement beneath the banking figures. Digital payments are becoming increasingly ordinary in Indonesia, with transactions moving through phones and QR codes rather than through the physical exchange of cash. In July, digital payment volume reached 5.50 billion transactions, up 28.69 percent from a year earlier.

QRIS was among the fastest-growing parts of that system. Transactions using the QR-based payment network increased 82.42 percent year over year, supported by rising numbers of users and merchants. BI-FAST retail transactions also grew more than 31 percent, illustrating the increasingly digital character of everyday financial activity.

For consumers, monetary policy can feel distant until it becomes visible through borrowing costs, savings returns or the price of goods. Businesses experience the same connection differently, particularly when decisions about expansion depend on the availability and cost of credit.

The central bank is also maintaining incentives intended to encourage lending to priority sectors. As of early August, banks had received Rp446.5 trillion in Macroprudential Liquidity Incentive benefits through various channels, while banking capital remained strong.

That combination creates a landscape of cautious continuity. The benchmark rate has remained unchanged, but underneath it, lending is increasing, digital transactions are expanding and policymakers are continuing to adjust the mechanisms that guide liquidity through the economy.

For now, Bank Indonesia has chosen to leave the benchmark rate where it is. The next movements will depend on inflation, the rupiah, global financial conditions and the pace of domestic economic activity. In the quiet language of central banking, the message is one of maintaining stability while allowing the wider economy to keep moving.
