LAHAUL, India — A high-speed holiday trip turned into an absolute nightmare when a speeding Mahindra Scorpio SUV lost control immediately after exiting the north portal of the Atal Tunnel, breaking through roadside barricades and plunging onto an under-construction bridge below. The horrific crash left one tourist dead and three others severely injured.

The impact of the drop was so violent that the vehicle was left completely mangled, impaled by protruding iron reinforcing bars from the unfinished cement structure.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 PM on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 as a group of tourists was traveling from the popular hill station of Manali toward Lahaul.

According to preliminary findings by the local police, the SUV was traveling at an excessive speed. The moment the driver exited the tunnel, they completely lost control of the vehicle on the mountainous stretch. The vehicle veered sharply off the road, smashed straight through the safety barriers, and careened into the construction zone located directly below the path.

An official statement from the local rescue unit noted that the crash was severe enough for protruding iron bars from the unfinished structure to pierce the vehicle, leaving it mangled and trapped.

Upon receiving the alert, emergency response teams consisting of local police, the fire department, and regional administration officials rushed to the crash site. Because the Scorpio was severely pinned and structurally compromised by the iron rods, extracting the victims from the wreckage proved to be an incredibly challenging, hours-long task.

Firefighters and police personnel eventually managed to slice through the wreckage to pull the survivors from the crushed frame.

While the local police have launched an active investigation to review the mechanical condition of the vehicle and rule out any other variables, officials emphasized that negligent speeding appears to be the primary cause of the tragedy.

The local administration and police have repeatedly issued strict warnings urging motorists to adhere to the rigid speed thresholds inside and directly outside the Atal Tunnel, where sudden transitions in light and tight mountain curves require extreme driver focus. Graphic videos and photos of the mangled SUV hanging from the pillar have surfaced widely on social media platforms, sparking renewed calls for stricter speed enforcement along the highly trafficked tourist route.
