Albanian police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse anti-government protesters outside parliament on Thursday after clashes broke out and demonstrators threw eggs and flour at police and some deputies.
Albanian media reported that three police officers and one protester were injured during the unrest. The renewed confrontation unfolded as protests—led by critics of the government’s handling of corruption allegations—have continued in Tirana for more than a month.
The demonstrations have focused on alleged corruption tied to coastal development projects and nearby protected areas. Protesters initially rallied against a planned luxury resort project and said it was linked to Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump, before the opposition broadened to other projects along the coast. The Albanian government denies corruption.
On Thursday morning, protesters gathered before a parliamentary session began. As lawmakers entered the building, protesters threw eggs. Later, police used water cannons and tear gas to push back the crowd.
Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has led Albania’s government since 2013, said the protests had shifted from a message of civic values to conflict and violence.
Earlier in the year, clashes erupted during protests demanding the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku over alleged corruption. Balluku was dismissed, but mistrust among opponents has persisted. A new protest was announced for Saturday
