XAISOUMBOUN PROVINCE, Laos — In a stunning breakthrough that has sparked both jubilation and renewed urgency, five villagers trapped inside a flooded cave for over a week were discovered alive on Wednesday. However, the mission is far from over as dozens of Lao and Thai volunteers continue a treacherous race against time to locate two others who remain missing.
The drama began on May 19, 2026 when a group of seven local men entered the remote cave system in central Laos’s rugged Xaisomboun province. Local authorities noted that while the exact reason for their entry has not been officially confirmed, the cave is a well-known spot frequented by artisanal miners looking for gold deposits, despite frequent safety warnings. Shortly after they ventured inside, torrential rains unleashed sudden flash floods and a landslide that completely sealed the narrow, rocky entrance.
One companion who had been near the entrance managed to escape just as the waters rose, immediately raising the alarm.
For more than eight days, the seven men were swallowed by total darkness. The breakthrough came on Wednesday afternoon when expert rescue divers finally navigated the completely submerged, pitch-black tunnels.
Emerging from the floodwaters into a small, isolated chamber, the divers’ flashlights captured an emotional scene: five of the missing men huddled together on a high rock shelf, their headlamps still faintly flickering.
"I’m still shaking. Our team made it happen," said Bounkham Luanglath, a breathless member of the Lao Organization Rescue Volunteer for People, in a voice message shortly after the discovery.
Videos shared online showed rescue crews outside the cave weeping, hugging, and jumping for joy as the news echoed down the mountain.
While the discovery of the five men is being hailed as a miracle, rescuers face a grueling secondary phase. The cave's entrance is located at the end of a grueling 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) steep jungle hike and is barely wide enough for a single person to squeeze through. Inside, the conditions are hostile, characterized by narrow 60-centimeter (23-inch) restrictions, plunging floodwaters, and a dangerous buildup of carbon dioxide.
For now, the five survivors remain inside the cave. Divers have successfully delivered food, clean water, and oral rehydration salts to stabilize them. Lead rescue divers noted that the men are "in good spirits" but disoriented. Crews are currently setting up internet communication cables to monitor their health and plan to give the men a "test run" with scuba equipment to see if they are strong enough to make the perilous underwater journey out.
Meanwhile, the operation has shifted into a dual mission. Even as medics tend to the five survivors, dozens of specialized volunteers are diving back into the treacherous waters, refusing to leave until the final two missing villagers are found.
