2,100-Year-Old Roman Shipwreck Loaded With Hundreds of Amphorae Found off Sicily

Archaeologists off the coast of Palermo, Sicily, have uncovered a 2,100-year-old Roman shipwreck carrying hundreds of amphorae—large ceramic jars used primarily to transport wine and olive oil. The vessel, dating to the second century B.C.E., was found near Isola delle Femmine in the Mediterranean at a depth of about 302 feet. Researchers used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and high-precision marine equipment to document the wreck and amphora cargo. The find is expected to shed light on ancient maritime trade and regional wine production routes.
