10 Dead, Including Child in Chernihiv, as Russia and Ukraine Trade Fierce Aerial Attacks

KYIV, Ukraine — At least 10 people have been killed across multiple regions after Russia and Ukraine exchanged a massive, coordinated wave of retaliatory aerial bombardments. The tit-for-tat strikes, featuring a dense deployment of ballistic missiles and explosive drones, inflicted a severe civilian toll on both sides of the border.

The single deadliest incident occurred in the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, where a Russian drone deliberately targeted a busy ATB supermarket during afternoon shopping hours, killing a young child and a woman.

In Chernihiv, panic erupted at approximately 4:13 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2026 when an explosion ripped through the ZAZ neighborhood. A Russian jet-powered drone slammed directly into an ATB supermarket, causing severe structural damage and igniting a fire. Concurrently, drone strikes hit two additional locations nearby, including a car repair shop and a warehouse.

The strike claimed the lives of two people: a 23-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl. Up to 25 others were wounded in the blast, including a 10-year-old boy.

Volodymyr Tymoshko, head of the National Police in the Chernihiv Oblast, stated that preliminary findings show the drone was equipped with a video camera. Investigators note this indicates a highly deliberate attack meant to maximize civilian casualties rather than target a military asset. In response to the tragedy, local officials declared a official Day of Mourning for the victims.

The tragedy in Chernihiv was part of an expansive, multi-city bombardment. Overnight and into the day, Russian forces unleashed seven ballistic missiles and 136 drones across Ukraine.

Heavy fire and widespread shelling hit multiple regions, causing severe damage and casualties. In Kyiv, at least five missiles triggered residential fires and injured three people, while a civilian was killed and multiple others were injured across Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv due to intense drone strikes. Tragically, the hostility also claimed the lives of two emergency employees from the state energy firm Naftogaz, who were killed during a rescue mission under fire in Sloviansk.

Simultaneously, Moscow accused Ukrainian forces of launching retaliatory cross-border strikes targeting civilian infrastructure inside Russian territory and Russian-occupied areas, which contributed to the total death toll of 10 across the day's hostilities.

The severe escalation drew swift condemnation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who labeled the daytime strikes on public markets and residential spaces as unadulterated terror. Zelenskyy renewed his urgent appeal to international allies, emphasizing that the mounting civilian deaths highlight an immediate need for more robust, advanced air defense systems to seal Ukrainian skies against relentless drone and missile networks.
