Wiley Park Tragedy: Three Dead After Suburban House Fire Devastates Southwest Sydney Home

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — A tight-knit suburban street in Sydney’s southwest has been plunged into mourning after a ferocious overnight house fire claimed the lives of three family members.

Emergency crews rushed to a residential property on Cornelia Street in Wiley Park at approximately 9:45 PM on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 following frantic Triple Zero (000) calls from neighbors. Despite a massive response from emergency services, the fast-moving blaze completely destroyed the rear of the property, leaving a community searching for answers.

Five fire trucks and 20 firefighters arrived at the scene to find a fully developed, intense fire, with roaring flames already shooting out of the building's windows.

First responders faced severe access issues and physical obstacles as they fought their way toward the source of the fire. Crews had to battle through the burning exterior of the property, aggressively extinguishing flames that had engulfed perimeter scaffolding and a garden trellis.

Once inside a granny flat located at the rear of the main home, search teams made the grim discovery of three bodies. While formal forensic identification is still underway, authorities believe the victims are a 52-year-old man, his 43-year-old wife, and their 16-year-old son, who were known to reside in the flat. Tragically, the man’s elderly mother, who lives in the main front home, survived the incident. Neighbors reported that the family had lived at the property for roughly 20 years.

The property has been locked down as an active crime scene. Detectives from the Campsie Police Area Command have launched a joint investigation alongside the State Crime Command’s Arson Squad and specialist fire investigators to determine what sparked the deadly inferno.

Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell, who attended the scene on Thursday morning, noted that investigators will thoroughly examine the layers of debris once the structural integrity of the building is secured.

"To lose three people in one fire like this is an absolute tragedy," Commissioner Fewtrell said. "This is a stark reminder of the dangers of home fires, particularly during the winter period. We remind people of the importance of having working smoke alarms."

Police are urging anyone with information or relevant dash cam footage from Cornelia Street around the time of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers. A comprehensive report is currently being prepared for the Coroner.
