The US administration has sent a warning to Sudan’s Islamist movement—linked to the Muslim Brotherhood—indicating that additional US sanctions may be introduced, after already designating parts of the movement earlier.
A senior US official said the State Department has designated the Sudanese Islamic Movement as both a Global Terrorist Organization and a Foreign Criminal Organization, and accused fighters affiliated with the movement of receiving training and support from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The official also pointed to prior sanctions targeting the Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigade, citing its role in Sudan’s conflict and links to Iran.
The warning framed the US approach around using sanctions and other available tools to deny Iran and associated groups resources needed to support activities Washington describes as terrorism, while reaffirming that the US sees “no military solution” to the war in Sudan. The official said the administration is working toward humanitarian ceasefire efforts and broader efforts to reduce external military support to the warring parties.
The report also notes broader related US measures discussed alongside the warning, including restrictions affecting humanitarian and development financing and other policy steps taken as the conflict continues and displacement grows.
