US conducts strikes on Iran after attack on cargo ship

The U.S. military conducted strikes on Iranian targets in response to an attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes hit missile and drone storage facilities and coastal radar positions. The action followed a Thursday drone attack on a cargo ship that halted a planned evacuation of sailors in the region. President Donald Trump said Iran carried out what he described as a “foolish violation” of the truce.

Tehran said the cargo ship was attacked because it was using an unauthorized route through the Gulf waterway. After the U.S. strikes, Iran accused the U.S. of violating their interim understanding and said it carried out strikes targeting locations linked to American forces.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also said it struck U.S. military positions in the region, while warning that if the aggression continued, its response would be broader.

The strikes came as the U.S. and Iran were working under an interim memorandum designed to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz under conditions that included “safe passage” for commercial vessels.
