US bans imports of more Chinese technology goods, FCC says

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said it will ban the import of additional equipment from a group of Chinese manufacturers, extending the scope of earlier restrictions on Chinese-made telecommunications and video surveillance gear.

The FCC said the expanded ban builds on a 2022 action that blocked approvals for new models of equipment from companies including Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Hikvision, and Dahua due to U.S. national security concerns.

Under the new rule, the FCC said it will also cover older models—not just equipment introduced starting in late 2022—when the equipment is used for purposes such as public safety, security of government facilities, physical security surveillance of critical infrastructure, and other national security uses.

The FCC said the expanded ban is set to take effect in early July and that it is necessary to protect U.S. national security by mitigating risks to the U.S. communications sector. The FCC also said Americans can continue using equipment they already have.
