Ukraine Hits Key Russian Oil Facility Supplying Moscow in New Drone Strike

Ukraine carried out a fresh drone strike targeting a key Russian oil facility supplying Moscow, according to Russian officials and multiple reports on Thursday.

The attack hit the Kapotnya oil refinery in the Moscow area, where flames and thick black smoke were reported after the strike. It was described as the latest in a series of Ukrainian attacks aimed at Russian energy infrastructure and the systems that sustain the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strike was a response to a recent Russian attack on Kyiv that damaged a historic religious site, warning that if Ukraine is attacked, Moscow would face consequences. He framed the drone campaign as pressure on ordinary Russians as well as retaliation for continued Russian strikes.

Russian authorities said air defenses intercepted a large number of incoming drones during the assault. Despite that, the refinery strike went through, and the impact was visible across parts of the city and region.

Local officials also reported disruptions connected to the attack. Flights from several Moscow airports were temporarily halted, and drones and debris were said to have caused additional damage in the Moscow region, including impacts on civilian areas.

The Kapotnya refinery is considered strategically significant because of its role in supplying fuel to Moscow and the surrounding region. It has been targeted previously in recent days, according to reports, with earlier strikes damaging parts of the facility.

The episode underscores Ukraine’s continued ability to hit high-value targets deep inside Russia using long-range drones, while Moscow maintains extensive air-defense coverage around the capital.
