Tragic N2 Head-On Crash in KZN Claims Four Lives, Including Two Men and Two Women

DURBAN — A devastating head-on collision on the N2 highway in northern KwaZulu-Natal has left four people dead, marking yet another dark weekend on the province's roads.

The horror crash occurred late Sunday night, July 26, 2026 near the Bhoboza off-ramp within the Inkosi uMtubatuba Local Municipality. According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements, the violent collision involved a Hyundai H1 minibus and another transport vehicle.

Emergency response teams and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) arrived at a scene of complete devastation. Paramedics confirmed that four occupants—initially reported by local transport authorities as two men and two women—succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

The N2 highway had to be closed for several hours while forensic investigators examined the wreckage and emergency workers cleared the scattered debris. The road was eventually declared clear by the RTI early Monday morning.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, expressed his profound sorrow over the incident after receiving an official briefing from traffic officials.

"In times like these, we are always called upon to show compassion," MEC Duma stated. "In this regard, we have assigned teams from my office and the department to be closer to the bereaved families during this painful time."

Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya noted that this tragedy is part of a deeply concerning spike in fatal weekend accidents across KZN. The crash follows a string of recent mass-fatality incidents in the province, including an accident on the R612 near KwaDumisa that claimed six lives, and a separate head-on collision on the R34 Memel Road in Newcastle that left six dead earlier in the month.

Authorities have cautioned motorists about the extreme dangers of long-distance night driving during the winter months, citing reduced visibility, sudden drops in temperature, and driver fatigue as major contributing factors to recent road fatalities.

The exact cause of Sunday night's collision remains unknown. Law enforcement and accident reconstruction experts have opened a formal investigation into the root cause of the crash.

Officials have once again urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, strictly adhere to speed limits, and ensure adequate rest before undertaking night travel on major provincial arteries.
