STANDERTON, Mpumalanga — A horrific head-on collision between a commuter bus and a minibus taxi on the R39 road has plunged a local community into mourning. The crash, which occurred early on Thursday morning, May 21, 2026, resulted in the loss of 10 lives.
Emergency medical services, law enforcement, and traffic officials were alerted to the accident at approximately 5:15 a.m. The collision occurred on the route connecting Standerton and Morgenzon. According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, all 10 deceased were occupants of the minibus taxi, including the driver. The group of fatalities comprised nine men and one woman.
While eight people died instantly at the scene, the death toll rose as the tragedy unfolded. A ninth victim succumbed to their injuries while being transported to the hospital, and a tenth individual passed away while receiving treatment at a medical facility in Standerton.
The driver of the bus sustained only minor injuries, while the single passenger aboard the bus escaped the collision completely unharmed.
While an official investigation into the cause of the accident is underway, authorities have noted that thick morning mist significantly blanketed the R39 at the time of the crash. This dense fog is believed to have drastically reduced visibility for motorists on the route.
Although environmental conditions are a primary focus of the inquiry, officials have not ruled out other factors. "While the cause of the crash is under investigation, reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out at this stage," stated the provincial department.
Provincial and district leadership have expressed their deep sorrow following the event. Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the survivors a swift recovery.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has also issued a plea to all road users to exercise extreme caution, particularly during early morning travel, and to strictly obey traffic laws to prevent further tragedies on the province's roads.
