MANILA, Philippines — A horrifying vehicular accident turned a bustling morning commute into a scene of carnage when an out-of-control closed delivery van careened onto a crowded sidewalk, killing three pedestrians and critically injuring two others.
The incident occurred during the peak morning rush hour along a major thoroughfare. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the white aluminum-bodied delivery van suddenly swerve across multiple lanes of traffic, clipping another vehicle before jumping the curb.
The vehicle plowed directly into a group of commuters who were waiting near a jeepney stop and walking along the designated pedestrian sidewalk. Due to the sudden nature of the crash, the victims had absolutely no time to react. The van finally came to a halt after smashing into a concrete utility pole and a roadside commercial storefront.
Emergency medical teams and local traffic police rushed to the chaotic scene within minutes. Regrettably, three victims were pronounced dead on arrival due to severe, catastrophic impact injuries.
Authorities are currently withholding the identities of the three fatalities—two men and one woman—pending family notification. Meanwhile, two additional pedestrians who sustained major trauma and multiple fractures were stabilized by paramedics before being rushed to a nearby hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
The driver of the closed van, who sustained only minor bruises, was immediately taken into police custody at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest mechanical failure may have played a primary role in the tragedy.
"The driver claims that the brakes completely failed as he was descending the flyover," a lead traffic investigator stated. "However, we are conducting a full forensic mechanical inspection of the vehicle to determine if brake failure or human error and speeding caused this devastating loss of life."
The driver faces multiple criminal charges, including reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, multiple physical injuries, and damage to property.
